Highly Popular they were back in the early 80's.

The most famous one is of course the Roxanne craze that took place after the release of UTFO's "Roxanne Roxanne".
response songs included "Roxanne's Revenge" and "Roxanne's On A Roll". Artists even named themselves after the whole thing: Roxanne Shanté, The Real Roxanne and even Roxanne's brother.
According to UTFO member Kango, over 100 responses were made.

Other response songs were:
"I'm Somebody Elses Guy" by Frederick MC Count Clinton (inspired by Jocelyn Browne)

Sexual Rappin by T. Ski Valley (inspired by M. Gayes Sexual Healing)

"Ain't Gonna Pay You One red Cent" by Wally Jump Jr. (the response to Gwen Guthrie's "Ain't Nothing Goin On But The Rent)

and also two MJ tracks:
"Billie Jean" was made into "Superstar (I'm Billie Jean and I'm Mad as hell)" by Lydia Murdock.
"Thriller" became "Doin' It In A Haunted House" by Yvonne Gage.

Any other you know of??

Yeah KB, I remember those. I remember going to the record shop and scanning the 12" section for all of those Roxanne cuts.....sheesh, they were alot of them!

Another one would be:

The Song: The Rain by Oran Juice Jones

The Answer: The Storm by ? (Can remember at the moment)

I've been asking round about this "The Rain" answer song but nobody seem to know the artist.

another one is King MC's response to Janet's "What I You done For Me Lately" entitled What I Have Done for You Lately (as far as I recall  )
