Around 1987-89 black music evolved from disco/funk/freestyle and into these sparse contemporary hip-hop beats with r&b singing and complex harmonies. Largely responsible for creating the genre was producer Teddy Riley with tracks for Kieth Sweat, Guy, Johnny Kemp and many others.
