The Fixx & Wang Chung prove that some ’80s products remain relevant

News Contributing Reviewer, Nancy Parisi of The Buffalo News in Buffalo, New York wrote a positive article regarding The Fixx and Wang Chung who performed at Canalside on July 25, 2013. An excerpt from her article follows:

Originating from the time when acid-washed jeans, “Just Say No,” oversized shoulder pads, and drum machines ruled the land, The Fixx and Wang Chung proved that some ’80s products remain relevant – and attractive. Both bands, pop staples of clubs and radio of that era, performed Thursday at Canalside.

Wang Chung hit the stage with vocalist Jack Hues noting immediately that it was a “small but perfectly formed crowd.” They began their set with three from their 2012 recording, “Tazer Up!,” a topical array of tunes.

Their second selection, “Let’s Get Along,” was enlivened by a departure from the song’s lyrics to channel the power of their signature “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” with chorus calling for everyone to “Wang Chung tonight.” The guitar work and vocals of original bandmate Nick Feldman were rock solid. Joining the two onstage were Josh Thompson on drums, and Tony Banks on vintage-sounding synthesizer.

80’s New Wave band A Flock of Seagulls’ van recovered, but gear is gone

Mike Score of A Flock of SeagullsSeems that the eighties band A Flock of Seagulls‘ is in a bit of a jam. The band’s leader, Mike Score tells CNN “The van itself was found, but all the gear was taken. The van was empty.” Investigators are searching for fingerprints and other clues on the vehicle.

The good news is: “The word, though, is out and we have lots of other band members scouring eBay and Craigslist for signs of the equipment,” Score said. Southern California guitar stores have lists of the stolen gear in case someone tries to fence it there, he said.

Score told reporters that he is anxious about a hard drive that was in the van, since it contained songs from his upcoming solo album. The music “was just about ready to go” when it disappeared with the van, he said.

A reorganized version of the 1980s English New Wave band has been playing gigs with co-founder Score as the only original member. Their biggest hit was “I Ran (So Far Away)” in 1982.

Beaming with pride, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Bon Jovi and his wife are people “who never take New Jersey away from themselves.” Read more at CNN.com…

The Goonies turns 28 years young

The GooniesAs if us Generation X‘ers didn’t feel old enough, we have The Goonies movie to give us a little reminder. This beloved American adventure–comedy film directed by Richard Donner and story by Steven Spielberg opened 28 years ago today on June 7, 1985.

I watched The Goonies again not too long ago with my two eldest children (they were around 5 and 7 years of age at the time) and quickly had forgotten about how movies were rated differently back in the 80’s. If I remember correctly, there were plenty of the sh*t word said and possibly an f-bomb but I cannot verify that at the time of this being published. Quite the strong language for a PG movie, however, The Goonies is still a quintessential 1980’s movie classic!

The Goonies grossed $9 million in its opening weekend in the US, second on the charts behind Rambo: First Blood Part II. It grossed over $61 million that year, placing it among the top ten highest-grossing films of 1985 (in the US).

‘Bea Arthur Naked’ is worth more than $1.9 million — no joke!

Bea Arthur NakedHey guys, remember way back in high school hormone days when you had a rise in your Levi’s and it always seemed to be at the absolute worst moment? Then you try to think of the least sexiest thing to ease things up a bit? For me, that was imagining Golden Girl Bea Arthur naked.

Well, that has now become a reality thanks to artist John Currin. As listed on his Christie’s webpage, the painting is signed and dated ‘John Currin 91′ on the overlap, it’s oil on canvas, the dimensions are 38 1/4 x 32 in. and was painted in 1991.

Painter John Currin has fetched a bunch of simoleons; $1.9 million to be exact. Feast your thoughts on that (click Bea Arthur’s photo at your own risk)!

Iron Maiden’s ‘Piece of Mind’ album turns 30

Iron-Maiden-Piece-of-MindFor you folks that bought Iron Maiden’s ‘Piece of Mind‘ album in 1983; Are you feeling old yet? The album was recorded January – March 1983 and released May 16, 1983.

‘Piece of Mind’ was Maiden’s fourth studio album released by EMI and by Capitol Records in the US, where it was reissued later by Sanctuary/Columbia Records. This was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust and has been Iron Maiden’s drummer ever since.

The album was a commercial success, reaching No. 3 in the UK Albums Chart and achieving platinum certification in the UK and North America.

Track Listing:

If you have forgotten the track listing, here you go:

  1. Where Eagles Dare
  2. Revelations
  3. Flight of Icarus
  4. Die with Your Boots On
  5. The Trooper
  6. Still Life
  7. Quest for Fire
  8. Sun and Steel
  9. To Tame a Land

Fun Fact:

At the beginning of the sixth track, “Still Life”, the band included a hidden message which could only be understood by playing the album backwards. This was a joke and an intended swing back at the critics who had accused Iron Maiden of being Satanic.
