The Fixx & Wang Chung prove that some ’80s products remain relevant

News Contributing Reviewer, Nancy Parisi of The Buffalo News in Buffalo, New York wrote a positive article regarding The Fixx and Wang Chung who performed at Canalside on July 25, 2013. An excerpt from her article follows:

Originating from the time when acid-washed jeans, “Just Say No,” oversized shoulder pads, and drum machines ruled the land, The Fixx and Wang Chung proved that some ’80s products remain relevant – and attractive. Both bands, pop staples of clubs and radio of that era, performed Thursday at Canalside.

Wang Chung hit the stage with vocalist Jack Hues noting immediately that it was a “small but perfectly formed crowd.” They began their set with three from their 2012 recording, “Tazer Up!,” a topical array of tunes.

Their second selection, “Let’s Get Along,” was enlivened by a departure from the song’s lyrics to channel the power of their signature “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” with chorus calling for everyone to “Wang Chung tonight.” The guitar work and vocals of original bandmate Nick Feldman were rock solid. Joining the two onstage were Josh Thompson on drums, and Tony Banks on vintage-sounding synthesizer.

Beastie Boys rapper Adam “MCA” Yauch dies

Adam “MCA” Yauch, a member of the groundbreaking New York rap trio Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 47, Rolling Stone magazine reported Friday afternoon.

Yauch revealed in July 2009 that he had surgery for a cancer in a salivary gland and a lymph node. Information on the cause of Yauch’s death wasn’t immediately available.

Yauch’s death would come less than a month after the Beastie Boys were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Because of his fight with cancer, Yauch did not attend, Rolling Stone reported.

The Beastie Boys – Yauch, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond – did not perform that night. But Horowitz read a letter from Yauch to the audience.

“I’d like to dedicate this to my brothers Adam and Mike,” Yauch wrote, according to Rolling Stone. “They walked the globe with me. It’s also for anyone who has ever been touched by our band. This induction is as much ours as it is yours.”

The Beastie Boys’ debut album, 1986’s “Licensed to Ill” – featuring the singles “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party),” “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” ” Paul Revere” and “Brass Monkey” – was the first rap album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard album charts.

RIP MCA.

‘Rock of Ages’ – Broadway’s 80’s musical comedy hit

You might have heard of one of Broadway’s most spectacular musicals (especially us 80’s fans!) called Rock of Ages. In addition to playing on Broadway (starting in 2009), Rock of Ages is also showing in Chicago (starting Sept. 2010), Toronto and Melbourne (Melbourne in 2011).

For those who don’t know about this totally tubular musical; Rock Of Ages is a Tony nominated smash hit musical comedy starring American Idol’s Constantine Maroulis and Amy Spanger. In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small-town girl met a big-city dreamer – and in L.A.’s most legendary rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the ’80s. It’s a hilarious feel-good love story told through the hit songs (including several medleys / live mash-ups) of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more.

Rock Of Ages Tony Award Nominations:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Actor in a Musical: Constantine Maroulis
  • Best Direction of a Musical: Kristin Hanggi
  • Best Costume Design: Gregory Gale
  • Best Sound Design: Peter Hylenski

2011 Film

The film rights have been sold to New Line Cinema. The film is expected to be directed by Adam Shankman and is expected to begin production in the Summer of 2010, for release in 2011.
