Iron Maiden’s ‘Piece of Mind’ album turns 30

Iron-Maiden-Piece-of-MindFor you folks that bought Iron Maiden’s ‘Piece of Mind‘ album in 1983; Are you feeling old yet? The album was recorded January – March 1983 and released May 16, 1983.

‘Piece of Mind’ was Maiden’s fourth studio album released by EMI and by Capitol Records in the US, where it was reissued later by Sanctuary/Columbia Records. This was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust and has been Iron Maiden’s drummer ever since.

The album was a commercial success, reaching No. 3 in the UK Albums Chart and achieving platinum certification in the UK and North America.

Fun Fact:

At the beginning of the sixth track, “Still Life”, the band included a hidden message which could only be understood by playing the album backwards. This was a joke and an intended swing back at the critics who had accused Iron Maiden of being Satanic.

The London o2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire concert dovetails Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock: Live in Europe  CD, DVD, Blu-ray and Ltd Deluxe Collector’s Edition, released by inakustik on Monday December 10th.  Live In Europe was recorded and filmed in Tilburg, the Netherlands in May 2012, and at 2011’s London’s High Voltage Festival.

Duran Duran to headline Olympics concert

Duran DuranLondon will be going back to the 80’s with Duran Duran (among other headliners) kicking off the 2012 Olympics.

Duran Duran who’s hits include “Rio“, “Reflex“, “Notorious” and “Ordinary World” will represent England at the July 27 concert in London’s Hyde Park, which will feature acts from each of the four parts of the United Kingdom.

The other headliners are Snow Patrol from Northern Ireland, Stereophonics from Wales and Scotland’s Paolo Nutini.

According to The Associated Press, Duran’s lead singer Simon Le Bon said that the show would be “one of the highlights of the last decade for us.”

Tickets go on sale Friday.

Cutting Crew – (I Just) Died in Your Arms [music video] 1986

The Cutting Crew is a pop-rock band formed in England in 1985, best known for their #1 hit, “(I Just) Died in Your Arms“.

Vocalist Nick Van Eede founded the group along with Canadian guitarist Kevin MacMichael in 1985, and the two made demos that led to a recording contract, before bassist Colin Farley and drummer Martin Beadle joined in 1986.

Their first album, Broadcast, was released on Virgin Records in 1986. Although Virgin Records was already a major label in the UK, their debut song, “(I Just) Died in Your Arms“, provided the first U.S. hit for Virgin as a full-fledged label.

Swedish Rockers “Europe” to film forthcoming UK Tour

EuropeSwedish hard rockers EUROPE are set to film the entirety of their London o2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire concert on Saturday February 19th. The concert will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in October 2011, and will also include a bonus live CD.

The London concert is part of Europe’s Balls N Banners UK tour which kicks off at the Glasgow o2 ABC on Thursday February 17th. The forthcoming DVD release will also include behind-the-scenes footage, including rehearsals and backstage banter filmed during the rest of the dates on the rest of the UK tour. Europe will perform music from their current album Last Look At Eden, plus classic tracks from their albums Wings of Tomorrow, The Final Countdown, Out of This World, Prisoners in Paradise, Start From The Dark and Secret Society.

“We’re taking some new directions with our songs, and we’re exploring different styles, says Europe’s lead singer Joey Tempest about the songs from the Eden album. “There is a definite classic rock vibe on some of the tracks… a tip of the hat to groovin’, funkin’ 70s rock songs, but ones we have bought into the here and now.
